A Bit About Swords Part One
So you enjoy wielding a sword in the computer games, but when it comes to real life do you know the difference between your broadsword and your katana? Do you know a good sword from a second rate knock off? Do you know how to use one?
Well we’ll talk you through it step by step. First of all, the swords you see in fantasy games are mostly Zambatu (see Cloud from Final Fantasy for the most ridiculous example of a Zambatu) or longswords. A Zambatu is a sword with a wide blade that is incredibly heavy and needs to be wielded with two hands (and is sometimes referred to as a broadsword though the term broadsword can be used to refer to many different types of blade including the one handed arming sword). This takes a lot of effort and sacrifices speed for pure power where the weight of the sword is used partly to generate more power. The other great advantage of the Zambatu is that its width allows it to be used as a shield; lifted just up to the users body in order to block incoming attacks from arrows or smaller swords. It is also double edged meaning that it can cut with both sides.
The other, the longsword, is another two handed sword that is far thinner and easier to wield. These again require two hands, but are in reality far more practical for combat. They have a cruciform handle and were highly popular around the middle ages.
